A unique archive consisting of press cuttings, photographs and ms. notes, arranged in over 100 boxes in the basement store. It centres on Kent and Sussex mills, but there is also a substantial coverage of other U.K. and European mills. So far we have made an index to the U.K. mills The collection also contains about 200 books on mills and milling, which we hope to catalogue in the near future.
Muggeridge Collections William B. Muggeridge's collection of photographs of English windmills from 1904 was originally given to the library on glass plates. Prints have been made of all of these, so that users may view them in the Special Collections room. Prints have also been made from the photographs taken by William's son, Donald Muggeridge, thanks to grants in the past from the University of Kent's Development & Alumni Annual Fund. We have listed these on WEB pages., arranged alphabetically by county (pre 1974 boundaries & names)
Recently through the VERDI project we have been able to afford the staff to catalogue and scan Donald Muggeridge's colour slides of mills all over Europe and some from the U.S.A. The cataloguing has been done on an archival database, Modes for Windows (MfW), and the details mounted on WEB pages via a specification written by the Special Collections' Librarian, Sue Crabtree.
In July 1998 Donald Muggeridge donated a set of negatives of pictures of other subjects- e.g churches & church furnishings, milestones, village pumps and inn signs. Click here for a brief list. . Again as part of the VERDI project we have recently been able to scan and catalogue William Burrell Muggeridge's collection of glass plates of windmills and of churches and other rural subjects.
It must be emphasised that all these images remain the property of the University of Kent and may not be reproduced digitally or as hard copy without the permission of the Special Collections' Librarian.
Readers requiring traditional copies of these photos can obtain prints through the Library Photographic Department.
Recently the Templeman Library has been pleased to accept a donation from John Holman of the Holman milling family: a collection of photographs, letters, postcards, newspaper cuttings and notebooks which he started to assemble as a young boy. So far only a brief list of the contents has been made.
Taken by Don Filmer, and donated by the East Kent Mills Group on their disbandment.
